Programs That Make a Difference

Jim Long works hard for North Carolinians, each and every day and in everything he does. Want proof? Here are a sampling of programs he instituted or was involved in developing during his tenure as insurance commissioner:

  • SHIIP, Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program
  • North Carolina SAFE KIDS
  • Click It or Ticket
  • Booze It & Lose It
  • 1-800-JIM LONG, consumer hotline for insurance question
  • Regional Offices in Asheville and New Bern
  • The Unauthorized Entities Unit, fighting insurance fraud by cracking down on unlicensed companies

In addition to his duties as insurance commissioner, Long also serves as the state fire marshal. During times of emergency, especially with the natural disasters North Carolina has seen in the past several years, Jim Long mobilizes his forces to help citizens any way he can. Employees in the fire and rescue division of the Department of Insurance serve on the State Emergency Response Team, and Long also commits insurance personnel to visit disaster areas and assist with filing claims. No matter what the problem or where it is in North Carolina, Jim Long makes sure that the Department of Insurance is there to help.

"If there is one thing we know how to do by now in North Carolina, it's respond to widespread emergencies! We've had our share in the last few years. Here at the Department of Insurance, I make sure we have a consumer hotline in place all year round. Insurance experts are on hand to answer questions, take complaints and offer guidance to anyone who need help - before or after an emergency. We are also the agency housing the office of state fire marshal, and my employees serve on the state emergency response team. So my employees are here to help on the frontlines and behind the scenes."
